The book I am reading right now is called "Memoirs of a Geisha." It's about a girl named Chiyo-Chan who is growing up in a little village in Japan when her mother dies. Her father sends her and her sister to a town far away where she must train to be a Geisha. She is separated from her sister, who went to live somewhere else when they arrived. Being a Geisha means that you have to always look your best, and act and say all the right things in order to earn your stay at the Okiya. (where Geisha live while in training) Chiyo is must live with another Geisha named Hatsumomo-San, who is out to destroy her career, and almost does. But when Chiyo meets Mameha, things start to look up. Mameha agrees to become Chiyo's older sister (someone who trains a Geisha) because Hatsumomo is the one person who Mameha truly hates. Together the two fight for Chiyo's career, while Hatsumomo keeps attempting to end it.
